Stranding Biologist:

General Duties: The Stranding Biologist will work with the Stranding Program Manager, contract veterinarians, staff, students, interns and volunteers to enhance reporting and response efforts for marine mammal strandings; collect consistent, high-quality data that are used to determine causes of strandings and death; support research projects; and engage in public education and outreach. Specifically, the position will help monitor a 24-hour stranding hotline; assist with and lead field stranding response; collect, archive and inventory samples; lead and participate in necropsies; manage data and documentation, including writing reports; maintain equipment and ensure safe and clean lab conditions; assist with public outreach activities and volunteer coordination; contribute to research projects, conduct data mining, and data analyses.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: BS degree in biology, marine science, wildlife biology, or other relevant field.

Minimum previous experience: 1 yr of experience in a related field

Requirements:

  • Valid driver鈥檚 license and clean driving record;
  • Applicant is required to obtain an Alabama vessel license and
  • complete a DISL boating safety class, and
  • should be willing to obtain a hazardous materials shipping certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Occasional out-of-state and overnight travel required.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in a professional setting, including ease of speaking to the public and responsible use of social media
  • Physically fit, able to lift at least 50 lbs and strong swimmer
  • Ability to endure long hours under harsh field conditions,
    • including temperatures ranging 20掳F-100掳F,

  • Must carry a 鈥済o-bag鈥 when on-call
  • and have dependable transportation for rapid response outside of normal business hours
  • Knowledge of marine mammal conservation issues, especially relating human interactions
  • Experience with computer software such as MS Office, and ArcGIS
  • Prior experience with stranding response and necropsy (marine mammal or other relevant large-animal experience) is a plus
  • Familiarity with MMPA, NOAA/NMFS and USFWS stranding protocols

 

The position is full-time for 1-year, with the possibility of extension based on funding and performance. Pay is competitive and will be commensurate with experience.

Supervision: The Stranding Biologist will be directly supervised by the Stranding Programs Manager in collaboration with the MMRP Director.

Established in 2011, ALMMSN is a cooperative regional stranding network partner that works in conjunction with NOAA's NMFS and USFWS to respond to dolphin, whale and manatee strandings. ALMMSN responds to an average of 40 cetacean and 3 manatee strandings annually, including 1-3 live marine mammal strandings per year. , a nonprofit organization with the mission to inspire environmental stewardship of Florida's coastal ecosystems through education, research, and advocacy is actively seeking candidates for the following positions:

in the Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the University of South Alabama, and based at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate to support a variety of ongoing research projects in coastal and fisheries ecology. The position is currently funded for 1.5 years with a probable extension to 2 years pending further funding. The successful candidate will primarily focus on the analyses of existing datasets, and writing publications, both primary authored papers that the candidate develops, and co-authorship from assisting student and other collaborative projects. Datasets include State fishery-independent long-term monitoring trawl, seine, and gill net data, long term environmental data, nekton community data, and the integration of multiple data streams from the Alabama Comprehensive Living Shoreline Monitoring Program.

Qualifications:

飩 PhD in marine science, ecology, environmental science, or a related field

飩 High-level quantitative skills in analyzing large datasets such as long-term fishery independent monitoring data

飩 Strong record of rapid publication

The preferred start date is July 2025, but flexibility is possible for the ideal candidate. Post-doctoral salaries at USA start at $61K for 12 months, plus benefits. is seeking a Research Technician to support ongoing research projects along the Alabama coast. This is
a full-time, 1-year position with a 6-month probationary period, and the potential for extension based
on performance and funding availability. The candidate will play a crucial role in project management,
field data collection and analysis, and associated reporting. The role offers training in ecological
sampling methods (nekton surveys [seine nets, throw traps, underwater video], wetland vegetation
monitoring, bivalve surveys, topographical mapping) and sample processing (benthic infauna,
sediment, nekton).

Qualifications:

飩稭aster's degree in marine science, ecology, environmental science, or a related field, or
equivalent experience
飩稥xperience in ecological research and fieldwork
飩稰roficiency in data entry and basic data analysis
飩稟bility to perform physically demanding fieldwork in potentially challenging conditions
飩稶.S. citizenship or residency

Preferred Qualifications (one or more of):

飩 Experience in project management
飩 Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and applications

Friends of Pando, is working and dedicated to educating the public, supporting research and preservation efforts, and inspiring stewardship of the Pando Tree, the largest tree in the world. An official partner to Fishlake National Forest, our organization undertakes work to protect, monitor and restore this unique tree to ensure it can be enjoyed by generations to come. Our organization is seeking a candidate for a part-time, flexible role helping us improve management and protection of Pando through remote sensing projects. The candidate will work with the team to develop strategies and protocols to leverage LiDar data sets to better understand and monitor the tree鈥檚 health over time. While this is a part/flexible opportunity, this project also carries potential for publication credits on remote sensing on a natural subject known the world over.  

Responsibilities

1. Assist Friends of Pando and our partners in evaluating data sources EX: point clouds and shape files
2. Assist team with development of plot strategies working with Arc Gis or similar tools
3. Work with team to marry plots maps and data sources
4. Work with the team to evaluate and test methods to improve data pipeline 
5. Work with he team to document methods 
6. Work with team to replicate results 

Requirements

1. Must be experienced Arc Gis Pro user

2. Must have work experience using LiDar data sources (RGB, ordered and unordered)  

3. Must have laptop and availability to work as a member of a remote project team
4. Must be available for part time and flexible between late May of 2025 and late December of 2025. (This role is part time flexible)
5. Background in any one of the following domains preferred; botany, silviculture, GiS, ecology, data visualization
